The Mendez family wanted a detached ADU for rental but also wanted covered access to the main house for their grandmother, who would use the ADU and needed to feel connected.
We designed a 850 sq ft detached ADU with a beautiful covered breezeway connecting it to the main house. The breezeway provides weather protected passage, a shaded outdoor dining area, and a shared pergola garden between the two structures. The ADU itself has one and a half bathrooms for guest accommodation.
The breezeway became the favorite outdoor space for the entire property. Grandmother has full independence but easy access. The design has been copied by neighbors as a best of both worlds solution.
